Tyrell Provides Solution for BBC Springwatch

Springwatch Greatly Increases Public Interaction with Enhanced Home Movie Slot on Popular Wildlife Show and Website.

Tyrell CCT, a leading creative technology solutions provider for the broadcast and post production industry, today announced that the company has provided BBC Vision, a major integrated multimedia broadcast and production group, with a file based user generated content solution for Springwatch, BBC's high profile wildlife programme. Tyrell CCT combined Aspera's Connect Server and Anystream's Agility encoding solution to enable the high speed ingest and delivery of content to and from BBC's Outside Broadcast site at Pensthorpe Nature Reserve, Norfolk. The solution provided the BBC with a comprehensive workflow that ensured the quick and easy broadcast of nature related home movies submitted by the general public for this hugely popular slot on the Springwatch show and website.

The workflow process, designed by Tyrell CCT, involved the submission of user generated content via the Springwatch website to the production team in BBC's Television Centre. All approved media was uploaded using Aspera's Connect Server to the Pensthorpe site for assimilation into the tapeless post production workflow. The Aspera Connect Server offers easy, secure and managed file delivery utilising WAN acceleration and data encryption technologies. Once successfully delivered to the site, content was automatically moved to Anystream's Agility Encoder for transcoding into Avid MXF format. Anystream's encoding solution enables companies to rapidly repurpose content for broadcast, Web, VOD, mobile, IPTV, as well as many other emerging outlets. The encoded output was then delivered by Anystream Agility to the Avid Unity shared storage system for use by the programme's editing teams in both Norfolk and Wales.

The Springwatch web specialists have also trialed the combined Anystream and Aspera solution for encoding the show's highlights in Flash and delivering these packages for upload back to the Springwatch website. In addition, Tyrell CCT provided BBC Vision with consultancy services and onsite support for this cost effective and efficient workflow solution.

"We have had to really develop this year's show to facilitate the rapidly growing levels of viewer interaction we are now experiencing," commented Tim Scoones, Executive Producer, Springwatch. "From the outset, Tyrell CCT demonstrated a clear vision for the processes involved in bringing the wide variety of public content into our post production systems. The technology and workflows provided by Tyrell CCT enabled the secure and easy delivery of large volumes of user generated content for the show."

"Tyrell CCT is delighted to have delivered a cost-effective and secure user generated content solution to the highly popular BBC Springwatch show," commented Nick Soper, Pre Sales & Technical Director, Tyrell CCT, UK. "We have built upon our vast experience in workflow design to provide an automated delivery process for the public content which greatly enhances the production of the show with minimal requirement for additional resources."
